Free Bird Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Pipi the Bird

Crochet Pipi the Bird with this free bird amigurumi crochet pattern. You can make this bird with any yarn you like, I used sport weight cotton yarn for the small bird and super bulky chenille for the big bird. The bigger the yarn, the bigger your bird will be.

Size bird sport weight cotton yarn and 2.5 mm hook: 7 cm / 3 inch
Size big bird made with super bulky chenille yarn and 5.0 mm hook: 16 cm / 6 inch

There is a full free video on how to create this cute bird here:

Materials:

These are the materials that I used. You can replace them with other materials, you wish to make a larger or smaller version of this bird, you can just use a thicker or thinner yarn/crochet hook.

Small bird: 7 cm / 3 inch

Pink cotton – catania color: 114
Yellow Cotton – catania color: 208
Brown Cotton – catania color: 157
Synthetic Poly filling
1 pair black safety eyes: 8 mm

The big Pipi the bird (16 cm / 6 inch) was made with Chenille yarn (super bulky), 5.0 mm hook and 16 mm safety eyes.

TIP Chenille/Velvet or other similar yarn: The body of the bird amigurumi might look a bit to oval when crocheting it, don’t worry about it, it will be fine when you put stuffing in it.

Check the materials page on my website if you need help in choosing the right materials.

If you are making your bird from chenille or velvet yarn, it is a good idea to sew on the tuft now.
Take 3 strands of yarn and fold them, sew them in de top of the body and sew in the ends in the inside of the body. And make a knot in the yarn. This kind of yarn frays, so you can’t just use cut yarn pieces like I did on the small cotton crocheted bird, because it will fall apart. I needed to adjust this bit of the pattern for this kind of yarn.

  • Rnd 9: (sc in next 5 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times [42]
  • Rnd 10: (sc in next 6 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times [48]
  • Rnd 11-17: sc in all 48 st [48]
  • Rnd 18: (sc in next 6 st, dec) repeat 6 times [42]
  • Rnd 19: (sc in next 5 st, dec) repeat 6 times [36]
  • Insert 8 mm safety eyes between round 14-15 with an interspace of 11 st.
  • Rnd 20: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 6 times [30]
  • Rnd 21: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times [24]
  • Stuff the bird body with toy fiberfilling and continue stuffing as you go.
  • Rnd 22: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 6 times [18]
  • Rnd 23: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 6 times [12]
  • Rnd 24: dec 6 times [6]
  • Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Using your yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitchand pull it tight to close. Weave in the yarn end.
  • Make a tuft on the head, cut 3 pink yarn strands. Fold the strands and pull them through the top of the head with your crochet hoog and make a knot to secure them.
  • See this video on how to sew the tuft on the head: https://youtu.be/f19ZY_oQzyA
