Free Chicken Crochet Pattern

Cute Chicken Keychain Amigurumi

Crochet a very cute chicken keychain with this free chicken crochet pattern. This is an easy small beginner crochet project that you can make in about one hour. It is a great pattern for left over yarn. I love making mini amigurumi, because they just take a little bit of time to create a very cute gift.

I made the small keychain version from sport weight cotton yarn. But you can also crochet the chicken from bigger yarn, for example plush chenille yarn, your Amigurumi will become bigger and very huggable.

Materials:
These are the materials that I used. You can replace them with other materials. If you wish to crochet a larger or smaller version of this small chicken amigurumi you can just use a thicker or thinner yarn/crochet hook.

Cotton Sport Weight version 6 cm / 2 inch:
– Red catania cotton color – 115
– Yellow catania cotton color – 208
– White catania cotton color – 105
– Black catania cotton color – 110
Synthetic Poly filling

Chenille Super Bulky version 12 cm / 5 inch:
– Red Chenille yarn
– Yellow Chenille yarn
– White Chenille yarn
– Black Chenille yarn
Synthetic Poly filling

Supplies:
– Scissors
Tapestry needles with blunt point, nr. 16 or 17
Pins
Crochet hook size 2.5 mm 4/0 for the cotton or 5.0 mm H for Chenille yarn

Body:

  • Use white yarn
  • Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
  • Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 3: (sc in next 3, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (15)
  • Mark the beginning of round 5 with a piece of yarn if you haven’t already, so you can count the stitches later.
  • Rnd 4-5: sc in all 15 st (15)
  • If you want you can turn the chicken into a keychain by sewing two strands of folded yarn in the top and secure it on the inside of the body (in the video I do this a bit later, but doing it now is easier.)
  • Rnd 6: (sc in next 4, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (18)
  • Rnd 7: ch 4, Start in second ch from hook, sc in next 21 stitches (21 + 3 l)
  • Rnd 8: sc in next 3, inc, sc in next 5 st, inc, sc in next 2 st, inc, sc in next 1 st, inc, sc in next 1 st, inc, sc in next 2 st, inc, sc in next 4 st (30)
  • Rnd 9-11: sc in all 30 st (30)
  • Rnd 12: sc in next 1 st, dec 3 times, sc in next 4 st, dec, sc in next 2 st, dec, sc in next 1 st, dec, sc in next 1 st, dec, sc in next 2 st, dec, sc in next 1 st, dec (21)
  • Rnd 13: dec, sc in next st, dec 2 times, sc in next 14 st (18)
  • Sew the eyes on round 5, one eye between the 4th and 5th stitch and the other between the 9th and 10th stitch.

  • Stuff the body with toy fiberfilling and continue stuffing as you go.
  • Rnd 14: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 15: dec 6 times (6)
  • Finish the head by taking the last strand of yarn and sewing it through the front loops of every crochet stitch that you made in the last round. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Now stick a needle under the hole and weave in the yarn end.

Beak:

  • in yellow yarn
  • Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Sew the beak on rounds 5 and 6 of the body.

Comb part 1:

  • in red yarn
  • Rnd 1: start sc 7 in a magic circle (7)
  • Rnd 2: sc in all 7 st (7)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Comb part 2:

  • in red yarn
  • Rnd 1: start sc 5 in a magic circle (7)
  • Rnd 2: sc in all 5 st (5)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Both comb parts are sewed over round 1 and 2, comb part 1 is sewed on the front of the body, and comb part 2 on the back.

Wings 2x:

  • in white yarn
  • Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
  • Rnd 2: inc 2 times, hdc + dc + hdc in next st, inc 3 times (13)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Sew the wings on the side of the body. The wings are sewed below the sixth round.

Now your chicken is done!
