Crochet Hootie the Owl amigurumi with this easy, free, cute owl crochet pattern for beginners. This adorable bird pattern was first published in my book Amigurumi Made Easy and is now available for free on my DIY Fluffies blog.
Hootie the Owl in the photo was made with sport-weight cotton yarn and a B/1 (2.5 mm) hook. If you use the same yarn, your owl will be 5 inches (12 cm) tall. Use thicker yarn if you want to create a bigger bird.

Hootie is a kind and friendly owl who loves to bring treats to her friends in the forest. But sometimes, she can be a bit clumsy and drops the goodies while flying. Despite Hootie’s mishaps, her friends always love when she visits them. They know that Hootie means well and they appreciate the thought behind her gifts.

Basic Stitches Tutorial

Materials
These are the materials that I used. However, feel free to replace them with other materials of your choice. Furthermore, if you wish to crochet a larger or smaller version of the owl bird amigurumi using this free stuffed animal crochet pattern, you can simply use a thicker or thinner yarn and crochet hook.
Cotton Sport Weight version 15 cm / 6 inch:
– Purple Yarn and Colors Must Have color: 050: 40 gram
– Pink Yarn and Colors Must Have color: 048: 10 gram
– Yellow Yarn and Colors Must Have color: 014: 10 gram
– White Yarn and Colors Must Have color: 001: 8 gram
– Synthetic Poly Filling
– Crochet hook size B/1 (2.5 mm)
– Safety eyes 16 mm

TIP: Are you using are using Blanket yarn? Then I recommend a L/11 (8.0 mm) crochet hook.
For Super Bulky Chenille yarn I recommend a H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, for bulky velvet yarn a E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook.

- Position the eye patches between rounds 13-24 of the head, with an interspace of 1 stitch. Sew the remaining back loops of round 5 of the eye patches to the body (photo 1). Insert the safety eyes through the eye patches, between rounds 1 and 2, and push the safety eyes through the body fabric. You can use a chopstick to make a bigger hole if you find it hard to insert the eyes through the eye patch and body at once (photo 2 & 3) .

- Rnd 41: (sc in next 5 st, dec) repeat 8 times (48)
- Rnd 42: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 8 times (40)
- Stuff the body with fiberfill and continue stuffing as you go.
- Rnd 43: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 8 times (32)
- Rnd 44: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 8 times (24)
- Rnd 45: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 8 times (16)
- Rnd 46: dec 8 times (8)
- Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Using your yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitch and pull it tight to close. Weave in the yarn end.
Beak:
- Use yellow yarn
- Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
- Rnd 2: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (6)

- Slst in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the beak below the eyes of the owl. Stuff with fiberfill before closing the seam.
Wing 2x:
- Use pink yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (24)
- Rnd 5 – 9: sc in all 24 st (24)
- Rnd 10: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 11 – 14: sc in all 18 st (18)

- The wings don’t need to be stuffed. Sew the wings to the sides of the body between rounds 22-33 or your owl (photo 5).

Ear 2x:
- Use purple yarn
- Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
- Rnd 2: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (6)
- Rnd 3: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (9)
- Rnd 4: sc in all 9 st (9)
- Rnd 5: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (12)
- Rnd 6: sc in all 12 st (12)
- Rnd 7: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)

- In the next round we will join the 3 toes to create the foot.
- Rnd 5: sc in the next 4 st of the third toe (photo 6) , start in the first stitch of the second toe, sc in next 4 st (photo 7), continue in the first stitch of the first toe, sc in all 8 st, continue in the fifth stitch of the second toe, sc in next 4 st, continue in the fifth stitch of the third toe, sc in next 4 st (24) (photo 8).

- Sew the feet to the bottom front of the body.

Tail:

- Embroider feathers on the belly; the top feathers over rounds 28-30, the bottom feathers over rounds 32-34. There are 2 stitches between the top of the feathers and the beak and 3 stitches between the tips of two feathers.
