Free Elephant Crochet Pattern

Mini Love Elephant Amigurumi

Crochet a very cute elephant amigurumi keychain with this free elephant crochet pattern. This is an easy small beginner crochet project that you can make in about two hours. It is a great pattern for left over yarn. I love making mini amigurumi because they just take a little bit of time to create. As a result, you will have such a cute gift.

This is an almost no sew amigurumi pattern. The only thing you have to sew on are the feet.

I made the small keychain size version from sport weight cotton yarn. However, you can also crochet the elephant from bigger yarn. For example, plush chenille yarn will make your mini Amigurumi bigger and very huggable.

  • Rnd 19: (sc in next 7 st, dec) repeat 3 times (24)

  • Rnd 21: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 6 times (12)
  • Stuff the body with filling.
  • Rnd 22: dec 6 times (6)
  • Finish the head by taking the last strand of yarn and sewing it through the front loops of every crochet stitch that you made in the last round. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Now stick a needle under the hole and weave in the yarn end. It’s important not to cut the yarn; instead, sew it so that it sticks out on top of the body between rounds 21 and 22. This yarn end will be used to crochet the tail later on.

  • To continue, make a little loop by inserting your crochet hook into the body under round 21. Then, carefully grab the yarn and pull it through the body, creating a loop. (see photo 5 & 6)
  • There are two ways to make the tail, by crocheting in the loops on the backside of the tail or by crocheting in the side loops. The first method is a bit more difficult, but give a nicer shape of the tail.
  • Option 1: ch 5. Then, crochet into the loop on the backside of the chain (photo 8).
Next, start in second ch from hook, slst in next 3 st, slst in the body (3)
Lastly, sew in the remaining yarn into the body.
  • Option 2: ch 4, crochet into the side loop of the chain (see photo 7)
Next, start in second ch from hook, slst in next 3 st, slst in the body (3)
Lastly, sew in the remaining yarn into the body.
  • If you find this difficult, you can see how to does this step by step in the free elephant crochet pattern video that I made: https://youtu.be/JkS4ij3i6qw
  • Cut 2 strands of 4 in / 11 cm of pink yarn.
Take 2 strands and fold them. Then, attach them on the end of the tail (photo 9-10). Cut the yarn to the desired length (photo 11).

Legs 4x:

  • Use pink yarn
  • Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
  • Rnd 2: sc in all 6 st (6)
  • Fasten off with a slst.

Mini star:

  • Use yellow yarn.
  • Rnd 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring, sl st into the first sc (not to tight) (5)
  • Rnd 2: chain 2, Sl st into 2nd Ch from hook, sl st into next st (on Rnd 1)
chain 2, sl st into 2nd Ch from hook, sl st into next st (on Rnd 1)
chain 2, sl st into 2nd Ch from hook, sl st into next st (on Rnd 1)
chain 2, sl st into 2nd Ch from hook, sl st into next st (on Rnd 1)
chain 2, sl st into 2nd Ch from hook, sl st into next sl st (first slip stitch that you made in Rnd 1)
  • To slip stitch into another slip stitch is not very common, but I noticed it gives the star a nice shape. Make sure your first slip stitch (Rnd 1) is not too tight.
Sew the remaining yarn through the middle of the front side of the star
Leave a long piece of yarn to sew the heart o the body.
  • Additionally, you can sew the star on the back of the body.
