In 2008 I learned to crochet. The reason I wanted to learn how to crochet was a baby rattle that my baby son got when he was born. I thought it was so cute and wanted to make one myself to.
After making a rattle and some other amigurumi from several patterns, everything went into a box under my bed and was not opened untill 6 years later, when I started crocheting again and never stopped since then!
Now (almost 14 years after my baby was born) I have made my own fox baby rattle pattern.
Crochet this very cute fox baby rattle yourself with this easy to follow pattern. A perfect gift for a baby shower.
I have a basic stitches tutorial if you are a beginner. The tutorial has a lot of videos included.
Check out this video if you want to know how to color change in an amigurumi.
Materials:
These are the materials that I used. Cotton is a great yarn for baby products.
Orange catania color – 281
Green catania color – 205
Black catania color – 110
White catania color – 105
Synthetic Poly filling
1 pair safety eyes size: 9 mm
1 rattle ball 2-3 cm.
Supplies:
Scissors
Tapestry needles with blunt point, nr. 16
Pins
Crochet hook size 2.5 mm 4/0
Head:
- Use orange yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (24)
- Rnd 5: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (30)
- Rnd 6-7: sc in all 30 st (30)
- Rnd 8: (sc in next 4 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (36)
- Rnd 9: (sc in next 5 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (42)
- Rnd 10-16: sc in all 42 st (42)
- Insert both safety eyes between rounds 10 and 11, with an interspace of 9 stitches. See my video on YouTube on how to attach safety eyes the easy way.
If you have good quality safety eyes, they are impossible to remove (also almost impossible to attach, but I have a trick in the video that will help you with that). If you are not sure if your safety eyes are safe enough, you could embroider the eyes on the fox.
- Put the rattle ball in the head.
- Rnd 17: (sc in next 5 st, dec) repeat 6 times (36)
- Rnd 18: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 6 times (30)
- Rnd 19: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times (24)
- Rnd 20: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 6 times (18)
- Stuff the head with filling.
- Rnd 21: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 6 times (12)
- Rnd 22: dec 6 times (6)
- Finish the head by taking the last strand of yarn and sewing it through the front loops of every crochet stitch that you made in the last round. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Now stick a needle under the hole and weave in the yarn end.
Snout:
- Use white yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (9)
- Rnd 3: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (12)
- Rnd 4: sc in all 12 st (12)
- Rnd 5: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 6: sc in all 18 st (18)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the snout
- Embroider a nose on the snout with black yarn (see photo’s below). Stuff the snout with filling.
- Sew the snout on the fox head between the eyes between rounds 8 and 15.
Ear 2x:
- Use orange yarn
- Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
- Rnd 2: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (6)
- Rnd 3: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (8)
- Rnd 4: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 4 times (12)
- Rnd 5: sc in all 12 st (12)
- Rnd 6: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (15)
- Rnd 7: (sc in next 4 st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times (18)
- Rnd 8: sc in all 18 st (18)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the ears
- Fold the ears to flatten them.
- Sew the ears on the sides of the head between rounds 4 and 11.
When making the handle, you need to color change a lot of times. I have made a video to show you how to color change.
Handle:
- Start with orange yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)

- Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (24)
- Rnd 5: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (30)
- Rnd 6-12: sc in all 30 st (30)
- Rnd 13: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times (24)
