Cute Koala Amigurumi
Crochet a very cute Koala with this easy free koala crochet pattern, my most popular Amigurumi design. I originally created this adorable stuffed animal plushie in 2017, and since then, he has been on many adventures with me (see my instagram photo’s)
Now, the pattern is available for free. If you prefer a PDF version without ads, don’t worry, this cute koala crochet pattern is still available in my shops. The pattern is written in U.S. terms.
Size: The finished koala is about 6 inches / 15 cm tall when made with sport-weight cotton yarn. However, you can use any yarn you like, the thicker the yarn, the larger your koala will be!

This Cute Koala loves gardening! The eucalyptus trees that he grows are perfect for sleeping and eating! He always carries some leaves in the little pocket on his dungaree, he might get hungry.

Basic Stitches Tutorial

Materials
These are the materials that I used. However, feel free to replace them with other materials of your choice. Furthermore, if you wish to crochet a larger or smaller version of the koala amigurumi using this free stuffed animal crochet pattern, you can simply use a thicker or thinner yarn and crochet hook.
Cotton Sport Weight version 15 cm / 6 inch:
– Grey cotton SMC Catania color: 172
– White cotton SMC Catania color: 106
– Black cotton SMC Catania color: 110
– Blue cotton SMC Catania color: 253
– Synthetic Poly Filling
– Crochet hook size B/1 (2.5 mm)
– Safety eyes 1 pair: 10 mm
– 2x buttons: 10 mm

Supplies:
– Scissors
– Tapestry needles with blunt point, nr. 16 or 17
– Pins
TIP: Are you using are using Blanket yarn? Then I recommend a L/11 (8.0 mm) crochet hook.
For Super Bulky Chenille yarn I recommend a H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, for bulky velvet yarn a E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook.

- Stuff the head with filling.

- Finish the head by taking the last strand of yarn and sewing it through the front loops of every crochet stitch that you made in the last round. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Now stick a needle under the hole and weave in the yarn end.

Nose:
- Use black yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 4: sc in all 18 st (18)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the nose onto the head.
- Sew the nose onto rounds 18-23, on round 20 between stitch 33-40.
Ears 2x:
- Use grey yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
- Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (24)
- Rnd 5-6: sc in all 24 st (24)
- Rnd 7: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (30)
- Rnd 8-10: sc in all 30 st (30)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the ears onto the head. Flatten the ears.
Inside ears 2x:
- Use white yarn
- Ch 2
- Row 1: Start in second ch from hook, 3 sc in second ch, ch 1, turn (3)
- Row 2: inc in all 3 st, ch 1, turn (6)
- Row 3: (sc in next st, inc) repeat 3 times, ch 1, turn (9)
- Row 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc) repeat 3 times, ch 1, turn (12)
- Row 5: (sc in next 3 st, inc) repeat 3 times, ch 1, turn (15)
- Row 6: (sc in next 4 st, inc) repeat 3 times, ch 1, turn (18)
- Fasten off, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the inside of the ears onto the ears.
- Comb the inside of the ears with a dog comb to get a fury effect. It will take some time to get this effect, just keep brushing! Folding the ears while brushing will help to create a very fury effect.

- Sew the inside of the ears onto the ear.
- Sew the ears between rounds 8-21, the top of the right ear on st 14 of round 9 and the bottom on st 19 of round 20 of your koala Amigurumi.
- The top of the left ear on st 41 of round 9 and the bottom on st 55 of round 20.
Body:
- First make two legs:
- Leg 2x:
- Use grey yarn
- Rnd 1: start 8 sc in a magic ring (8)
- Rnd 2: inc 8 times (16)
- Rnd 3-5: sc in all 16 st (16)
- Change color to blue (I have a made detailed tutorial on how to color change)
- Rnd 6: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 4 times (20)
- Fasten one leg off with a slip stitch, do not fasten of the other leg.
Body:
- Continue to crochet in the second leg.
- Watch my video tutorial if you need help crocheting the legs together.
- Rnd 1: sc in the next 10 sc, (now we are going to join with another leg) continue in the first stitch of the first leg, in all 20 st of Leg 1 continue in the eleventh stitch of the second leg, sc in next 10 st (40)
- Rnd 2: sc in all 40 st (40)
- Rnd 3: (sc in next 4 st, inc in next st) repeat 8 times (48)
- Rnd 4-8: sc in all 48 st (48)
- Rnd 9: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 8 times (40)

- Rnd 14: sc in next 1 sc, change color to grey ,sc in all 39 st (40)
- Rnd 15: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 8 times (32)

- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the body onto the head.
- Now crochet a border between the blue and grey rounds. This technique is called Surface Crochet.

- Insert the hook under the first stitch, grab the yarn and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through the loop on the hook attaching the yarn to the body. Insert the hook under the next stitch.Yarn over and draw the yarn under the stitch and through the loop on the hook (like a slip stitch).
- Do this in all the stitches.
- Stuff the body with fiber filling.
Suspenders 2x:
- Use blue yarn
- Ch 18
- Row 1: Start in 7th ch from hook, sc in next 12 st
- Fasten off. Sew the beginning of the suspenders on the back of the koala, on the top border, 6 stitches apart. Sew 2 small buttons on the front of the body, between round 17-18. On stitch 7 and the other on stitch15.
- Now you can put the little hole of the suspenders around the buttons.
Pocket:
- Use blue yarn
- Ch 7
- Row 1: Start in second ch from hook, sc in next 6 st, ch 1, turn (6)
- Row 2-5: sc in next 6 st, ch 1, turn (6)
- Sew the pocket on the body on round 11-14.
- Sew the body onto the head, between round 31-32.

Arm:
- Use grey yarn
- Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
- Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
- Rnd 3-4: sc in all 12 st (12)
- Rnd 5: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 3 times (9)
- Stuff the arms with filling.
- Rnd 6-7: sc in all 9 st (9)
- Rnd 8: sc in next 2 st, dec, sc in next 3 st, dec (7)
- Rnd 9-14: sc in all 7 st (7)
- Put a bit more stuffing into the arms.
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the arms onto the body.
- Sew the arms on the sides of the body on round 15.
Tail:
- Use grey yarn
- Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
- Rnd 2: inc 4 times (8)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the tail onto the body or your koala.
- Sew the tail on the back of the body on round 4-5.
Optional:
Leaves (2x):
- Use green yarn
- Ch 9
- Row 1: Start in second ch from hook, sl st in next 2 st, sc in next 5 st, sl st in next st, ch 3 (8)
- Continue around to opposite side of chain.
- Row 2: Start in second ch from hook, sc in next 2 st, sl st in next st (first chain), sc in next 5 st, sl st in next 2 st (10)
- Fasten off with a slip stitch in the first st of row 1. Weave in the yarn end.
