Lizzie the Unicorn Amigurumi

Create Lizzie the Unicorn Amigurumi with this free unicorn crochet pattern by DIY Fluffies. Lizzie is a large Amigurumi, that is great for the beginners that have some experience in making Amigurumi toys.

All stitches that are used are explained in detail in my Amigurumi for beginners tutorial.

Lizzie the Unicorn is 26 cm / 10 inch tall when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm crochet hook. But you can use any yarn to create this Unicorn.

A little story about Lizzie the Unicorn:

Lizzie is a hard-working teacher in the Magical Forest School. Her work is truly fulfilling, but it’s also stressful. When she’s off work, she likes to go rainbow-hunting. Whenever she sees a rainbow through the light rain and gray clouds, her mood lifts as well, giving her manes all the colors of the rainbow!

Materials that you need:

These are the materials that I used. However, feel free to replace them with other materials of your choice. Furthermore, if you wish to crochet a larger or smaller version of the unicorn amigurumi using this free crochet pattern, you can simply use a thicker or thinner yarn and crochet hook.

TIP: Are you using are using Blanket yarn? Then I recommend a 8.0 mm crochet hook.
For Super Bulky Chenille yarn I recommend a 5 mm crochet hook, for bulky velvet yarn a 3.5 mm crochet hook.

Head:

Use white yarn
Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (24)
Rnd 5: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (30)
Rnd 6: (sc in next 4 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times (36)
Rnd 7-11: sc in all 36 st (36)
Rnd 12: sc in next 23 st, inc in next st, sc in next 2 st, inc in next st, (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 3 times, sc in next 2 st, inc in next st (42)

Mark the 28th and 45th stitch of this round with a stitch marker (for example a lefover piece of yarn). This will show you where to insert the safety eyes later.

Insert the safety eyes between rounds 14 and 15, in the stitches marked earlier.

Stuff the head with filling.

Finish the body by taking the last strand of yarn and sewing it through the front loops of every crochet stitch that you made in the last round. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Now stick a needle under the hole and weave in the yarn end.

Ears 2x:

Use white yarn
Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
Rnd 2: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (6)
Rnd 3: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (8)
Rnd 4: (sc in next 3 st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (10)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the ears onto rounds 24-25 of the head with 8 stitches between both ears.

Notrils 2x:

Use pink yarn
Rnd 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring (5)
Slst in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the nostrils on rounds 4-5 of the head with 3 stitches between both nostrills.

Horn:

Use grey yarn
Rnd 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring (4)
Rnd 2: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (6)
Rnd 3: sc in all 6 st (6)
Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 2 times (8)
Rnd 5: st in next 3 st, inc, st in next 4 st (9)

Fasten off with a slip stitch, leave a long piece of yarn to sew the horn onto the head. Put stuffing in the horn.
Sew the horn on top of the head onto rounds 16-20.

Body:

Make two hind legs first (start with fuchsia yarn)
Rnd 1: start 8 sc in a magic ring (8)
Rnd 2: inc 8 times (16)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc in next st) repeat 8 times (24)
Rnd 4: BLO sc in all 24 st (24)
Rnd 5: sc in all 24 st (24)
Change color to white
Rnd 6-10: sc in all 24 st (24)

Mark the first stitch of round 20 so you can easily count the stitches when joining the hind legs together later on. Fasten off with a slip stitch.
Make two front legs (start with fuchsia yarn)

Change color to white

Mark the 13th stitch on each front leg with a stitch marker.
Fasten off one leg with a slip stitch, do not fasten off the other leg.
In the next round, we’ll join the 4 legs to make the body.
Now continue with the second front leg we just made.

Rnd 1: ch 7 (now we are going to join with a hind leg) continue in the fifteenth (15th) stitch of one hind leg, sc in next 14 st, continue in the fifteenth (15th) stitch of the second hind leg, sc in next 14 st, ch 7, continue in the thirteenth (13th) stitch of the first front leg, sc in next 12 st, ch 2, continue in the thirteenth (13th) stitch of the second front leg, sc in next 12 st (68)
Mark the 35th stitch of this round with a stitch marker. This will help you to start the belly later on.
Rnd 2: sc in all 68 st (68)
Rnd 3: inc in the first st, sc in next 41 st, inc in next st, sc in next 25 st (70)

Rnd 5-10: sc in all 72 st (72)
Remove the working loop of white yarn from your hook, but do not fasten off. We will pick it back up to start round 11 later.

Belly:

Before we continue to crochet the body, we are making the bottom of the body, between the legs. Do not cut off the yarn, but use your other ball of yarn to crochet the bottom.
Pull up a loop in the 35th stitch of round 1 of the body (picture 1).
This part will be crocheted in rows.

Row 1: Start crocheting in the thirty fifth (35th) stitch of Rnd 1 of the body, sc in next 7 st, ch 1, turn (7)

Row 7: Start in second ch from hook, sc in next 13 st, ch 1, turn (13)

Fasten off.
Sew together hindlegs st 1-7 of first hindleg and 8-14 of the second hindleg. Now sew the bottom that you just made between the legs.
Now continue crocheting the top of the body.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the body to rounds 16-26 of the head, adding more fiberfill to the neck and body before closing the seam.

hair unicorn amigurumi — free unicorn crochet pattern

Manes:

Cut 10 strands of 4 in / 11 cm of fuchsia yarn.
Cut 12 strands of 15 in / 38 cm of fuchsia, pink, yellow, green, blue and purple yarn.
Start with 10 short strands of fuchsia yarn. Take 2 strands and fold them. Thread the folded strand onto an embroidery needle (photo 1) and attach them between rounds 22-23 (photo 2-4), 3 stitches away from the ear.
Sew two more strand next to the first. You now have 3 double strands at 3 stitches from both ears.
Sew one more between rounds 23-24, behind the first 3 (diagram below).
Sew 2 double long fuchsia strands between rounds 24-25.
Repeat between rounds 25-26 and 26-27.
Sew 2 double pink strands between rounds 27-28.
Repeat between rounds 28-29 and 29-30.
Sew 2 double yellow strands between rounds 30-31.
Repeat between rounds 31-32 and 32-33.
Sew 2 double green strands between rounds 33-34.
Repeat between rounds 34-35 and in the middle of round 35.
Sew 2 double blue strands between rounds 35-34.
Repeat between rounds 34-33 and 33-32.
Sew 2 double purple strands between rounds 32-31.
Repeat between rounds 31-30 and 30-29.

Tail:

Cut 4 strands of 9 in / 22 cm of fuchsia, pink, yellow, green, blue and purple yarn.
Sew 2 dark fuchsia strands next to each other between rounds 13-14, in the middle of the back of the body (diagram above).
Sew 2 yellow double strands between rounds 12-13, on the left side, below the fuchsia strands.
Sew 2 pink double strands on the right side.
Sew 2 green double strands between rounds 11-12, below the yellow strands.
Sew 2 blue double strands below the pink strands.
Sew 2 purple double strands between rounds 10-11.

Star 2x:

Use yellow yarn
Rnd 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring, sl st into the first sc (loosely (5)
Rnd 2: (ch 3, slst in second ch from hook, hdc in next ch, slst in next st on Rnd 1) repeat 5 times. The last slst should be made into the first slst of Rnd 1.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the stars on both sides of the body, on rounds 8 to 13, at 3 stitches from the tail.
