Ladder Stitch

Ladder Stitch

Learn how to do a ladder stitch with this easy step-by-step tutorial. The ladder stitch, also known as an invisible stitch, is commonly used to close stuffed animals, plush toys, and amigurumi projects. Because the stitches are hidden, it creates a neat and professional finish that is perfect for sewing parts together or closing openings after stuffing.

In the example below, the ladder stitch is used to close a turning gap. This stitch creates an almost invisible seam, making it perfect for closing openings after stuffing a toy. The dotted lines indicate where the needle passes through the fabric. As you pull the thread tight, the gap closes and the stitches disappear between the edges of the fabric.

A ladder stitch can also be used to attach separate pieces to a stuffed toy. By sewing back and forth between both parts and gently tightening the thread, the pieces are joined together with a neat, nearly invisible seam.

The horns on the rhino shown below were attached using this stitch.
